How can you love a stranger?
Oh, of course if you go to the Big Big Book
you're to love everybody, neighbors,
one another, even your enemy.
But really, a stranger?
Yet, experience shows it's true.
I've watched newcomers in the rooms
for years. Reluctant, downcast eyes,
nervous, often with tears ready
if not falling. And my own experience
as a newcomer among strangers,
scared yet amazed at hearing them speak,
as they told my own story, sounding like me
but full of hope, of joy, of recovery...
I remember when the newcomer was me
and love them now knowing their pain
and already love how they will blossom
if they keep coming back.
