I have learned that feelings aren’t shortcomings. The true nature of my problem was my stubborn refusal to acknowledge feelings, to accept them, and to let them go. I have very little power over what feelings arise, but what I choose to do about them is my responsibility. ~ Family Groups, Al-Anon. Courage to Change—One Day at a Time in Al‑Anon II. Al-Anon Family Groups. Kindle Edition.
I’m struggling with feelings
after almost thirteen years
in Recovery from
compulsive overeating.
Unfortunately,
ignored feelings still
beckon me to the kitchen,
if not that loathsome
alternatively, the drive-through
window. How can guilt
and apprehension demand
appeasement, pull so hard against
my best thinking?
The true nature of my problem
is my stubborn refusal
to acknowledge feelings,
to accept them,
and to let them go.
I have very little power
over what feelings arise,
but what I choose
to do about them
IS my responsibility.
