If we think of discipline in terms of punishment, we miss the more constructive meanings of the word. Discipline is order, training, practice, study. The Epistle to the Hebrews describes the two meanings:
They disciplined us for a little while
as they thought best;
but God disciplines us for our good,
in order that we may share in his holiness.
No discipline seems pleasant at the time,
but painful. Later on, however,
it produces a harvest of righteousness
and peace for those who have been trained by it.Ideal discipline is for our own good,
and the desired outcome is that
we share God’s holiness.
Discipline at best is tedious and repetitious,
but through discipline we become
part of a vast harvest of righteousness and peace
since we have been trained by discipline,
tedious and repetitious though
it may have been.
