The Gift or the Wrappings?

Silk cocoons tediously
unwound yield strong fiber.
Protected promised glory,
though, does not survive.
We try to save appearances,
protect armored covering
we've constructed to withstand
life's onslaught. Keeping up
appearances, though, maintains
the worthless shell, leaves
promised life beyond
the worm's world
impossible.
