Twelve Step and Scripture Parallels (Part One)

Psalm 38:4-5: For my iniquities are gone over my head; As a heavy burden they weigh too much for me. My wounds grow foul and fester Because of my folly.

Step 1: We admitted we were powerless over _______ — that our lives had become unmanageable.
Romans 7:24-25: “Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?”
Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Step 2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.”
Step 3: Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
1st Corinthians 11:28 But let a man examine himself.
Step 4: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
James 5:18 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.
Step 5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
Ephesians 4:22-23 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Step 6:  Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
